Satellite Beach Fire Departments Fire Prevention Program is completed by State Certified Fire Inspectors. Fire Preve
ntion Inspections are conducted annually on all commercial structures and businesses, and on all multi-family living units (Apartments and Condominiums). This is required by Satellite Beach City Code, and the Florida Fire Prevention Code. During the calendar year 2010, the Fire Prevention Bureau conducted 267 inspections and plan reviews.
A fire inspection is a periodic walk through of a business or structure and is conducted to check for items within the business insuring compliance. While one may argue that code compliance is the goal, the underlying goal is intended to keep the business safe and operating. All current codes have been developed from statistical information of fire causes, and from catastrophic events in which a large loss of life was realized.

While a fire inspection can occur at any time, the fire department works to conduct the inspection only once per year. Furthermore, these inspections are conducted at times most convenient to the business and are not intended to hamper the operation. Additional inspections may be required based upon a complaint, a special process or hazard, or follow-up from a previous inspection. A code violation is any act, process, installation or device that has been known to contribute to the start of a fire, or further a fire once started. Examples would be overloaded outlets, improper/faulty extension cords, or improper storage of flammable liquids. Another type of code violation is one that would hinder the exit of an individual during a time when exit is required. Examples would be blocked/locked exit door, exit lights not working.
